Well, I was, faced with this very same question just a couple of weeks ago so let me tell you what I did. The wicking filter is a smart little piece of design that gets the job done the right way. The part I liked about it was that it’s virtually dust-free. That is great for those of you who take real pride in your home and notice even small bits of dust. Sleep mode is something that’s definitely going to catch on in my opinion. By being able to push a single button and silence noise and block out visual indicators these guys are onto something. I love how simple it is to use and am really sold by the fact I don’t have to scroll through menu options to find it. This is ideal if you want to have it by your bed so you can give it a quick tap just before you drift off to sleep.

The final entry on my list comes from the team at Cool Mist. They get a lot right when it comes to standard units, so I wanted to test their specialist baby unit. Here’s how it got on as I round out my top 15.

Your little person can be a little bit difficult to put down for the night, especially if they’re surrounded by dry air. With that problem in mind, I unboxed the Cool Mist and installed it in our son’s nursery. It was easy to setup which was nice, but it also seemed to soothe him off to sleep the very first night. This certainly piqued my interest, so I decided to really put it through its paces to make sure this was no fluke…

If you want something that will silently do the job in one room, then I highly recommend this one!

These guys know a thing or two about keeping your home just as you like it which is why I was keen to take a closer look.

The square footage that this thing offers is very impressive, to say the least. If you have a large home, then it still has the ability to get the job done. I certainly didn’t notice any local hotspots or humid areas once I had it up and running.

The humidistat is an excellent piece of technology that makes controlling your home environment nice and easy. I found it to be highly reliable and I never noticed it struggling to keep pace with the changes that asked of it.

Digital readout displays your actual level

The readout is a great touch because it allows you to see what’s going on in real-time. That not only gives you the confidence that the unit is doing what it should. It also allows you to zero in on what levels you like at different times of the day. I really liked how easy the display is to get to grips with. I’d highly recommend it for anyone who wants to be able to control their humidity without any fuss or hassle.

The final thing I’d like to draw your attention to is the 9-speed fan. I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to cooling if you hadn’t already guessed so this was a big plus for me. The operating range is highly impressive, to say the least. If you want to make sure you have plenty of power in reserve, then look no further in my opinion folks. I deliberately alternated between setting it at the extremes of its range, and it handled both without any issues at all.

White dust is something that will have gotten on your nerves if you’ve invested in specific makes and models in the past. The great thing about the H12600 is that it employs an all-natural approach to get the job done. That means that there’s never any risk of unsightly dust build ups and that you’ll always have a unit that takes care of things.

How could I not sneak one last offering from these guys onto my list? Here’s how it got on when I put it to the test like never before!

The three speed setting on offer here may not sound like a lot, but they’re very well spaced out so that you get continuous overlap. That means there are no significant gaps between the settings which is ideal if you want to be able to select from a continuum. Highly recommended by yours truly!

The nighttime setting is easy to use and could make all the difference to light sleepers

The Nighttime setting is a nice touch and one that I certainly made a lot of use of. My wife is a light sleeper which is why I loved the quietness of the motors. It didn’t keep her awake and yet still did a great job of humidifying the room. This is a great little addition if you and your partner want to sleep right through the night.

The water bottle is easy to refill and is sure to make things simpler for you

The refill is an area in which many humidifiers fall down. Even with the best running performance in the world, if a refill is tricky a business, then your device will fall out of favor. That is especially true when you consider that you’ll have to refill most units on a daily basis. Personally, I found no issues with topping it up, and I don’t think you will either. I did it at the same time each morning, and it soon became a habit I did on autopilot in a couple of minutes.

The automatic shutoff is a feature that I was really pleased to see when I read through the manual. It gave me the added security that if I forgot to refill it, then it wouldn’t burn itself out. That is useful because it means that you don’t really have to worry about anything going wrong. The most that will ever happen is you’ll notice the air getting a bit dry and realize you need a top up.

These guys are at it again which means they’re doing something right! I love their robust and relia-ble approach to design so, let’s dive in and take a look!

3600 square feet of operation is going to be hard to beat

The great thing about this console style humidifier is just how big its operating range is. At well over 3000 square feet it makes cooling even a large home as easy as pushing the power button. Now all you’ll have to do is play around a little bit to figure out where the best place in the home is to put it.

Easy to clean design is a pleasure to work with

The easy clean design is something that I’m certainly a big fan of. By being able to quickly and easily take care of one of the more time-consuming bits of housework I found it to be a real time-saver. If you want a nice humidified home without the hassle of constant cleaning, then I’d say it’s worth a second glance folks.

Automatic shut off is a nice touch, but do you really need it?

Now, something I totally did like about this unit is the automatic shut off. It may not sound like a big deal to you, but once you’ve tried it, I can assure you that you’ll think differently. The great thing about it is that when it reaches the desired level, it merely shuts off and stays monitoring in the background. If the level changes, it will then turn on again and kick back into life. That is an excellent way of ensuring you never have to fiddle with a control panel once you find the level that works for you.

The idea of digital control is something that I’ve always been a big fan of. By being able to control your level with the press of a button, it makes things so much better than the analog world. If you want to experience it for yourself, then I’d suggest taking a closer look guys.

The next entry on my list comes with a big reputation so I couldn’t wait to put it through its paces. Here’s what I thought of it, my friends…

With 3000 square feet of operation, this unit more than holds its own on my list of the very best. If you have a large home or apartment, then I think you’re going to be in for a pleasant surprise. In my experience, there won’t be any local hotspots that aren’t uncomfortable. If you want a simple to use unit that gets the job done with minimal fuss, then I’d undoubtedly recommend putting it on your shortlist.

Evaporative rate of 0.5 gallons per hour

The evaporative rate is something that you may not have thought of, but it’s the foundation for a great little unit. At half a gallon per hour, this thing has plenty of power to get the job done when you need it to. Ideal for those times when you just want something that gets to work the moment you turn it on. If you live in a humid climate, then I recommend taking a closer look when you consider your options.

The digital control is a nice and easy piece of tech that gets the job done. By being able to set to whatever level you want and then sit back and relax it takes the hard work out of the equation for you. This is ideal for those of you who want something that works straight out of the box.

A small footprint but plenty of power for the entire home

What I like perhaps most of all is the small size of the device. It’s one thing having a powerful unit that gets the job done, but you also want it to integrate into your home. If it’s a massive unit, then you’re taking up a lot of space and not adding a great visual to your carefully crafted interior. Personally, I barely noticed this unit which is a huge plus, in my opinion.

Automatic humidistat makes humidifying fit for the 21st century

The humidistat being automatic on a unit is one thing, but when it really is as intelligent as the ads make out that’s something altogether entirely. What I loved is how low maintenance this thing was. I literally typed in the level I wanted, and it took care of the rest. Its a real triumph for intelligent design and a great advert for tech making our lives more comfortable at home.

Trapmax filter comes with built-in antimicrobial protection

The filter system was undoubtedly something that impressed me. The antimicrobial element is something that will be important to many of you, especially those with babies or young children. What I loved about it was that it didn’t impair the raw performance. Often these types of filters come at a cost to the efficiency of the unit. Not so in this case, I’m happy to share!

I loved how easy the pour-in fill design was to use

The pour-in design was clearly thought of and crafted after speaking to the customers which is nice to see. By being able to top it up on an as-needed basis easily, I was able to maintain just the right level for days on end. The prospect of a complicated service or refill always fills me with dread. Fortunately, in this case, everything was so easy that even I could do it!

Refill and filter indicators ensure you never have to resort to guesswork

The refill and filter change indicators, totally are the icing on the cake in my opinion. So often when we invest in these types of machines, we love them at first before leaving them to their own devices. The problem with this is that they do require the occasional bit of servicing to maintain optimal performance. With simple visual indicators that tell you what to do and when this unit takes the guesswork out of things. I appreciated this approach because to me interpretation is half the battle when it comes to new tech. Much like you, I love it when it just works!

The built-in tank is not the biggest on this list by any means, but because of the efficiency of the rest of the unit, it gets the job done. Easy to refill and fit back, it allows you to keep your humidifier up and running with minimum fuss or hassle. If you’re anything like me, then this is something you’ll really appreciate.

Sleep mode is a simple way to get a great night’s sleep

Now, sleep mode is something I wasn’t expecting to see, so I have to commend the team for this. They’ve taken a great little unit and then taken it up a notch by making it super user-friendly. By hitting a button, you can power down all the indicator lights and set it to run quiet. Perfect, if you want to drift off to sleep at the end of a long day.

Automatic safety shutoff is a long required setting for Humidifiers

Another clever little tweak that they’ve made is to add an automatic shutoff. That means that when it runs out of water, the machine will power down, so, as to avoid causing potential damage to itself. This is a good thing if you intend to have it running day and night, and like me, are a little forgetful! By having an intelligent piece of kit that knows how to look after itself, you’ll have one less thing to worry about. High recommended in this respect!

Matt black body is stylish and will match even the most modern home. The black design is a welcome break from the white humming boxes that you seem to see every time you shop. I like that they’ve put some thought into the style as well as the substance that lies beneath it. That tells me that these guys may be new, but they’re very much here to stay. Great news if ongoing customer support is something you value!

The H12 is a unit that has flown under the radar so I couldn’t wait to learn more about it. Here’s what I thought, so you can decide whether it makes it onto your shortlist!

A whole-house approach that gets the job done

The whole-house design is simple and easy to use which is perfect if you want to take care of your whole home in one go. By employing an intelligent control system and plenty of raw power they’ve created a unit that will thrive in any home. I personally, prefer this all in one approach because it means you won’t have to shuffle it around every other day to try and get more comfortable.

12 gallons of output that ensure you’re never left without a supply

The 12-gallon output is right up there with the most impressive stats and specs on my entire list. This means that you’ll have more than enough in reserve as you get your home precisely to your liking. With a whole host of options to get it up and running, you’ll easily find the best way to make use of it. I started with the manual and found it refreshingly easy to follow to be fair. A real triumph of customer service. Nicely done guys!

The 4-speed fan gives you more than enough choice for the task at hand

The four-speed fan gave me plenty of options when it came to getting things set just so. That allowed me to experiment a little bit and make a few tweaks depending on the weather. It’s these little touches that can make all the difference in my experience as they make a house a home. If you want a unit that gets the job done but gives you plenty of flexibility and adaptability, then this is indeed worth a second look. Just be sure you have an area in mind that can accommodate the relatively large footprint and you’ll be up and running in no time.

With a name like that, how could it not make it onto my list? Here’s what I thought of one of the catchiest sounding bits of kits on the market.

1000 square feet isn’t that much, but is it enough?

If you’ve read this list up till this point, then this is a spec that won’t blow you away. Yes, it’s about a quarter of some of the heavy hitters on this list, but does it really matter? Well, in my opinion, it just depends on what you’re trying to achieve. If you want to do your entire home, it won’t be enough. If you want to focus on a specific area, it’ll be ideal.

Easy fill Airlock tank is a nice user-friendly touch

The four-gallon tank is refreshingly simple to refill which always puts a smile on my face. If you want something that just works then this could be the unit for you. I had no issues with it so I would not hesitate to recommend it to you.

A 5-year limited warranty is a sign of excellent customer service and support

The length of the limited warranty is right up there with the very best on this list and is a great indicator of customer service. When a company gets behind its products for this long, you know that they care about their customers. That is ideal if you’re someone who expects these arrangements to be honored. I found their phone and email support to be top notch too. Nothing was too much trouble for them, and they apparently cared about my experience. Highly recommended if you want to partner with a team that cares about keeping you up and running.

The 3-speed setting has more than enough flexibility to get the job done

Three speeds may not sound like much but to be honest, they did the job I asked of them. That’s all you can ask at the end of the day isn’t it really? I would say that there isn’t that much overlap between the settings, so if you’re super discerning, then you may shop around a little more. At least that way you can assess whether the difference you get from more settings is worth it.

The innovative design certainly caught the eye of an engineering geek like me! They have changed the game in my opinion and all while staying true to the pure performance they’re known for. This is great news for those of you who want a unit that works without any hassle. Too often companies change designs for the sake of it and introduce a whole host of reliability issues along the way. That’s not the case here; nicely done!

Can deliver up to 3 gallons an hour without any difficulty

3 gallons per hour is extremely impressive and right at the top of the pile on this list! What I like is that the unit doesn’t struggle to do this. You could perhaps push it even harder, but you just don’t need to. By creating a device that delivers a massive spec with ease they’ve built something that will become increasingly well known for its reliability. Great news for those of you out there who, just like me, hate it when their tech breaks down!

Runs over an operating area of up to 4000 square feet!

The operating area is another spec where they’ve delivered in a big way. That again is fantastic news for those of you looking for a unit that will humidify your entire home without the hassle of smaller units doing subsections. If you want to refill it so that it keeps running day and night, then that’s easy too. All in all, I highly recommend this unit and wouldn’t hesitate to have one in my home for the foreseeable future. A great piece of design that introduces some much needed high-end reliability to the conversation.

15. Aprilaire 700 Automatic Humidifier

Following straight on from the 600M is the much-heralded 700. I couldn’t wait to unbox this power-house of a unit. Here’s how it got on…

‘Truly automatic control’ sounds impressive, but what precisely is it?

Automatic control is something many units aspire to, but so many fail to get quite right. Because of the quality of the sensors and feedback system, these guys have had no such issues. They’ve managed to create something that allows you to power it on, find your ideal setting, and then forget about it. In fact, the only thing that isn’t truly automated is the manual refill of the water tank!

Ideal for tightly constructed homes where the details matter

The operating area is a gigantic 4,200 square feet which caught my eye immediately. The interesting thing about this spec is that the unit is designed to work in tightly constructed homes. These are new builds that have tight spaces and lots of twists and turns. Often they are left with dry spots or hot spots when using lesser units because they can’t cope with the layout. Not so in this case; highly recommended!

The digital control is simple to use, and the range of options certainly aren’t overwhelming

Digital control always looks like it will make things simpler, but you never quite know until you try it for yourself do you? I was impressed with their approach to this issue, and it was a quick and easy job to get to grips with the controls. The buttons are intuitive and the range of settings far from overwhelming. An excellent all-around piece of design in my opinion.

Do you really only have to perform maintenance on it once a year?

If you don’t count a daily water top up as maintenance, then yes! This is quite neat because it means you can plug it in and forget about it for the most part. If that sounds like just what you need in your life, then I can’t recommend it highly enough. There’s also the argument that this low level of maintenance indicates high reliability. Based on the results of my testing in-house I’m inclined to agree with this school of thought. It genuinely didn’t struggle with anything I asked of it.
